There has always been a gap between recognizing an answer and being able to produce one. You read a clear explanation, nod along, close the tab certain you have it - then someone asks you to explain it out loud, in your own words, and the fluent feeling collapses. Psychologists call it the illusion of explanatory depth: we rate our understanding high until the moment we try to explain, and the rating falls.
The Feynman Technique is one honest response. Named for the physicist Richard Feynman, it is a four-move loop: choose one concept, explain it in plain words as if teaching a curious twelve-year-old, hunt the exact places you stumble or hand-wave, then go back to the source and simplify until it comes out clean. Reid Mercer treats understanding as something you can test and build, not a feeling to trust.
