全书跟着四家虚构的小公司：一家无库存的户外装备网店、一家自己压货的进口零食店、一家二十四辆车的租车行、一家做 To B 的原料分销商。选这四家是因为它们的结构完全不同：一家几乎没有固定成本，一家几乎全是固定成本；一家的钱压在货上，一家的钱压在客户手里。同一个问题放到它们身上，答案经常是相反的。
