Behold, I heard a voice of weeping in the earth, as it is written: In Ramah was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. And I, thy servant, wept also. For I looked upon the twentieth century, and I saw a generation destroyed for lack of knowledge, as the prophet Hosea cried, נִדְמוּ עַמִּי מִבְּלִי הַדָּעַת (nidmu ammi mibbli hadda'at) - my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. I saw the hospitals filled and the churches emptied of power; I saw the creeds standing where the fire once stood; I saw two world wars grind the nations as wheat between millstones, and the children of men crying for bread while their teachers gave them stones.
And in the midst of that weeping century, lo, God lit a lamp. He did not light it in a palace, neither in a seminary, nor in the marble halls of the mighty. He lit it in a one-room log cabin in the hills of Kentucky, over the cradle of a seventeen-year-old mother's firstborn son. And the name of that lamp was William Marrion Branham.
Verily I say unto thee, reader, before thou turnest another page, settle this in thine heart: God hath never left Himself without a witness. In every age He hath sent His φωνή (phōnē) - His voice. In the days of Pharaoh it was Moses; in the days of Ahab it was Elijah; in the days of the Herods it was John. And in the days of the atom bomb, the days of Hollywood and Hiroshima, the days when man split the atom and could not mend his own soul, God sent a little brown-eyed Kentuckian who could scarcely spell, and set upon him the mantle of the נָבִיא (navi) - the prophet - and confirmed him with signs, wonders, and miracles that this century, for all its cameras and its critics, could neither explain nor extinguish.
I write this book as a witness. I write it with mine own eyes wet, for I have seen the same Pillar of Fire that he saw; I have stood before the same Angel of the Covenant; and upon American soil I have beheld the Lord of Glory Himself. Therefore I do not write as a historian handling a corpse, but as a son handling a torch. I write that thou, and thy children, and thy children's children unto the thousandth generation, may know why I call William Marrion Branham the best prophet of the twentieth century - and that thou mayest catch the same fire.
