Don Johnson didn't set out to become a banker. In the late 1960s, he was a restless UNC student searching for direction when the Vietnam War rerouted his plans. Four years as a naval officer taught him discipline, sharpened his instincts, and required him to perform under pressure.
Back in civilian life, Johnson entered the volatile world of California banking with little more than grit, a drive to succeed, and an entrepreneurial spark. What began as awkward cold calls to privately owned businesses in Southern California, became a career built on relationships, bold risks, and an unwavering belief in small-business owners chasing their own American Dream. When corporate takeovers threatened that vision, he and four partners took the ultimate gamble-founding their own bank from scratch. Through market crashes, legal challenges, and the 2008 financial crisis, Johnson proved that high-touch service and steady leadership still matter.
