The research we conducted in Ivory Coast on Sarotherodon melanotheron has two complementary objectives. Fundamentally, the goal is to characterize-using experimental aquaculture rearing methods-the growth, feeding, and reproductive performance of the lagoon and freshwater strains of the species, based on a working hypothesis that the freshwater strain may be ecologically more efficient than the lagoon strain. Furthermore, whenever possible, we extend this analysis of the species' ecological adaptability to include considerations regarding its potential for aquaculture in the context of utilizing local genetic resources.
