You Are IMMORTAL: Ontology develops a philosophical inquiry into immortality understood as a present dimension of human experience. Hugo Noël Santander Ferreira examines consciousness through its everyday manifestations and proposes that human beings participate in eternity through ethical judgement, memory, dreams, imagination, intuition, creation, hope, love, and their relationship with time.
The work approaches ontology through lived experience. Laughter reveals the human capacity to recognise and embody ethical values; property illuminates the distinction between having and being; envy and admiration express different ways of relating to excellence and to others. Dreams, meditation, and imagination reveal a consciousness capable of inhabiting times, spaces, and realities that transcend immediate physical perception.
The analysis extends to waiting and faith as ways of projecting consciousness towards the future and eternity. Theatre, cinema, literature, and history likewise acquire an ontological dimension: they enable human beings to become simultaneously actors and spectators of existence, to engage in dialogue with those who lived centuries ago, and to project their thought and creations towards future generations.
Through a dialogue with Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Shakespeare, Calderón, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Hegel, Bergson, Husserl, Freud, Beckett, and other thinkers and writers, Santander Ferreira brings philosophy, literature, art, and religious experience together in a reflection on the nature of Being. Intuition and imagination occupy a central place as faculties through which consciousness formulates hypotheses, anticipates possibilities, and expands the boundaries of present experience.
The book also explores suicide, revenge, forgiveness, crime, suffering, and calamity as situations in which consciousness reveals its relationship with existence, responsibility, and time. From this perspective, the COVID-19 pandemic becomes a collective manifestation of the ontological structure of human life, placing millions of people simultaneously before mortality, solidarity, sacrifice, faith, and hope.
You Are IMMORTAL thus proposes an ontology of experience in which eternity participates in the present of consciousness. Bodily existence unfolds within time, while thought, memory, imagination, creation, hope, and love continually project the human being beyond the immediate moment. Immortality thereby acquires an ethical and existential dimension: every action, every creation, and every human relationship contributes meaning to a world that continues beyond the moment in which it occurs.
