What are the limits of political power?
Can equality be pursued without sacrificing liberty?
Who controls language, education, and historical memory?
What happens when ideology replaces reason?
What is justice?
What is injustice?
The essays gathered in The Left and Its Right explore these questions through contemporary events. Although several essays were originally published in Colombian newspapers, their scope extends far beyond any single nation. The same debates over freedom of speech, constitutional government, immigration, education, political violence, judicial authority, socialism, artificial intelligence, and historical memory can be observed throughout the democratic world. The names of the protagonists change, but beneath the surface lie conflicts remarkably similar to those of two centuries ago.
The chapters that follow begin in the United States, where many of the intellectual and political tensions that define the contemporary West first emerge with particular clarity. They then extend their scope across Europe and the broader Western world, moving from contemporary events to the larger questions of civilization that underlie them. Together, they describe not a sequence of disconnected controversies but a common struggle over the principles that sustain free societies.
The title expresses the central argument of the book. The Left and Its Right refers to opposing political camps, but it also suggests that every political movement eventually develops its own conception of what is right-its own moral language, historical narrative, and vision of justice. The title carries a second meaning as well. It reflects Santander's argument that much of what contemporary politics calls the Right has been defined-and, in many respects, created-by the ideological imagination of the Left as its necessary adversary. Political disagreement therefore cannot be understood merely as a contest between parties. It is, above all, a conflict between competing ideas, political vocabularies, and conceptions of human nature, freedom, responsibility, and civilization itself.
This volume is not beyond the Left and the Right, but between them-the title of Santander's first collection of political essays already announced that position. For the political philosopher does not stand above political conflict, but remains immersed in it. His task is neither neutrality nor militancy, but understanding and disclosure. In Santander's view, adapting Heidegger's hermeneutic insight, we understand in order to transform. The essays examine political doctrines according to reason, often at the expense of loyalty; evidence rather than slogans; and historical experience rather than fashionable opinion. Conservatism, liberalism, socialism, nationalism, democracy, and the institutions of the modern State are considered not as articles of faith, but as subjects worthy of critical examination.
The essay has always occupied a distinctive place within literature. Journalism records events; history orders them in retrospect. The essay seeks to understand the ideas that give those events their meaning. It is less concerned with immediate conclusions than with the patient work of connecting philosophy, history, politics, and culture into a coherent interpretation of the present.
