Để trả lời câu hỏi đó, chúng ta không có cách nà o khác hơn là phải nhìn thẳng và o cái số phận chung của mọi con người. Tất nhiên, chúng ta luôn mong muốn cho cái số phận ấy được thay đổi theo hướng tốt hơn, nhưng sự thật vẫn luôn là vấn đề của sự nhìn nhận đúng thật chứ không phải là theo như mong muốn.
Từ bao thế kỷ đã qua, lịch sử đã cho thấy, dẫu có những con người hiếm hoi nà o đó tìm được hạnh phúc mãn nguyện cho cuộc đời mình trong một chừng mực nhất định, thì bức tranh chung của nhân loại vẫn bà ng bạc một mà u bất toại nguyện. Và o bất kỳ thời điểm nà o trong lịch sử nhân loại như đã được ghi chép, ở bất cứ châu lục nà o, chúng ta cũng luôn thấy rằng đa số cư dân là những người nghèo khổ. Việc san bằng khoảng cách già u nghèo dường như luôn là mục tiêu lý tưởng của mọi xã hội, mọi chÃnh phủ cầm quyền, nhưng cho đến nay thì điều đó vẫn chỉ là mong muốn mà chưa bao giờ có khả năng trở thà nh hiện thực. Không có những thống kê thật chÃnh xác, nhưng dựa và o những số liệu tương đối có được, ta thấy số người rất già u có thường chỉ chiếm một tỷ lệ thấp (khoảng từ 3% - 5% dân số) nhưng lại nắm giữ một số lượng tà i sản kếch sù, có khi lên đến khoảng 90% của toà n xã hội. Thực tế nà y tồn tại xuyên suốt lịch sử nhân loại, từ Đông sang Tây, và cho dù đã có rất nhiều nỗ lực cụ thể để thay đổi điều đó nhưng kết quả lại chưa bao giờ được như ý muốn của những người thực hiện.
Sự nghèo khó luôn đeo đuổi con người qua mọi thời đại. Cho dù bản thân ta may mắn có được một cuộc sống tương đối đầy đủ đi chăng nữa, thì những mảnh đời nghèo khổ cơ cực dường như vẫn luôn hiện hữu đâu đó không xa lắm. Chỉ cần nhìn và o cuộc sống quanh ta với đôi mắt biết cảm thông và chia sẻ, ta sẽ luôn dễ dà ng bắt gặp rất nhiều những nỗi khó nhọc và bất hạnh.
