The Tantric Path of Power - Ritual, Energy, and Liberation in the Indian Esoteric Traditions offers a wide-ranging study of Tantra as a complex family of initiatory traditions rather than as a modern philosophy of sexuality, personal development, or generalized spirituality. Drawing attention to Śaiva, Śākta, Buddhist, and later yogic systems, Roberto Minichini examines the historical environments in which tantric doctrines, institutions, and practices took shape.
The volume follows the development of tantric religion through revelation, initiation, mantra, ritual authority, metaphysics, sacred architecture, subtle physiology, fierce divinities, royal patronage, extraordinary attainments, and modern reinterpretation. Technical concepts such as śakti, tattva, nyāsa, maṇḍala, nāḍī, cakra, prāṇa, bindu, kuṇḍalinī, siddhi, and liberation are explained within their original doctrinal and ritual settings, allowing readers without specialist training to understand their meanings without reducing their complexity.
Particular attention is given to the transformation of the practitioner. Purification, mantra placement, visualization, breath control, deity identification, internal sacrifice, and the construction of a consecrated body are presented as parts of an integrated discipline. The book also explores the terrifying forms of Bhairava, Kālī, Tārā, Chinnamastā, Cāmuṇḍā, yoginīs, and ḍākinīs, explaining the significance of skulls, blood, weapons, cremation grounds, impurity, transgression, and controlled confrontation with fear.
Tantra is situated within the political and material worlds that sustained it. Courts, temples, monasteries, artisans, hereditary ritual families, householders, ascetics, patrons, rulers, and village communities all participated in its history. Royal consecration, warfare, protection, landholding, taxation, temple administration, caste, gender, and institutional authority are examined alongside contemplative experience. The book distinguishes theological praise of feminine power from the actual social position of women, while also considering female teachers, patrons, initiates, queens, ritual partners, and embodiments of the Goddess.
The final sections investigate siddhis, practices surrounding death, yogic immortality, post-mortem states, liberation while living, and the different meanings assigned to freedom in Śaiva, Śākta, Buddhist, and haṭhayogic traditions. A substantial concluding study traces the colonial and modern reinvention of Tantra through missionaries, Orientalists, Indian reformers, nationalism, Theosophy, psychology, modern yoga, sexual liberation, New Age spirituality, and global consumer culture. John Woodroffe and Julius Evola receive detailed and critical treatment, with close attention to both their importance and their limitations.

Born in Mainz, Germany, in 1973, to an Italian father and a Croatian mother, he has written extensively on esotericism, astrology, divination, philosophy, literature, and comparative religion.
