Najm al-Din Kubra - Visions, Colors, and the Transformation of the Soul presents the life, teachings, and spiritual legacy of Najm al-Din Kubra (1145-1221), one of the most original masters of medieval Islamic mysticism. Born in Khwarazm during the final decades of Seljuk power, he lived through the rise of the Khwarazmshah state and the Mongol invasion that began in 1219 and reached Gurganj in 1221.
Najm al-Din Kubra - Visions, Colors, and the Transformation of the Soul presents the life, teachings, and spiritual legacy of Najm al-Din Kubra (1145-1221), one of the most original masters of medieval Islamic mysticism. Born in Khwarazm during the final decades of Seljuk power, he lived through the rise of the Khwarazmshah state and the Mongol invasion that began in 1219 and reached Gurganj in 1221.
Scholar, traveller, ascetic, contemplative, and spiritual guide, Kubra developed an exceptionally precise language for describing the inner movements of the soul. His teachings examine fasting, vigil, silence, retreat, control of speech, continuous dhikr, inward watchfulness, and the supervision required to prevent spiritual discipline from producing imbalance, pride, or illusion. Particular attention is given to Al-Uṣūl al-ʿashara and Fawāʾiḥ al-jamāl wa-fawātiḥ al-jalāl, works in which transformation is followed through bodily sensations, interior sounds, visionary figures, luminous forms, celestial images, and changing colours.
Green, red, yellow, white, and black are never reduced to a rigid symbolic code. Their meaning depends upon movement, intensity, transparency, duration, sequence, and the moral condition of the perceiver. Kubra's visionary teaching is placed firmly within Islamic spirituality, where imagination can translate hidden psychological conditions and spiritual influences into perceptible forms. Lights and images may guide the seeker, expose passions, or become veils when their splendour encourages vanity.
At the centre of the volume stands the relationship between jamāl and jalāl. Beauty signifies mercy, favour, attraction, sweetness, and nearness; Majesty reveals greatness, power, awe, sovereignty, and the destruction of every claim to spiritual ownership. The seeker advances through knowledge and love, contraction and expansion, intimacy and reverential fear, fanāʾ and baqāʾ. One of Kubra's most powerful images describes a light ascending from the human heart and another descending from the divine Throne, their meeting revealing the meaning of Light upon light.
The book follows the paths taken by Kubra's disciples after the destruction of Khwarazm. Najm al-Din Razi Daya composed Mirṣād al-ʿibād min al-mabdaʾ ilā al-maʿād; Saʿd al-Din Hamuya developed a doctrine of walāya that gave special importance to the Twelve Imams and Imam al-Mahdī; Sayf al-Din Bakharzi established an influential centre in Bukhara; later, ʿAlaʾ al-Dawla Simnani (1261-1336) created a more systematic doctrine of subtle centres, colours, and the spiritual body. The volume distinguishes these developments from teachings directly attested in Kubra's own writings.
The final pages return to Gurganj in 1221. Later sources relate that Kubra refused escape and remained among the population with whom he had lived and taught. His death during the conquest is separated from heroic and miraculous details added by later hagiography. His end became a symbol of fidelity, courage, spiritual responsibility, and refusal to abandon the community. The destruction of his city dispersed his disciples, yet carried the Kubrawi inheritance across Central Asia, Iran, Anatolia, Kashmir, and northern India. About the Author

A writer, poet, novelist, and essayist, he works on Islamic mysticism, Iranian culture, philosophy, astrology, German and Russian culture, the history of religions, fiction, and esotericism.
