Roberto Minichini Few figures in the history of Islamic thought have exercised an influence as profound, enduring, and controversial as Ibn ʿArabī. Born in Murcia in 1165 and formed in the intellectual world of al-Andalus, he travelled through North Africa, Egypt, the Hijaz, Iraq, Anatolia, and Syria before settling in Damascus, where he died in 1240. Mystic, visionary, Qurʾanic interpreter, poet, and metaphysical thinker, he created one of the most complex intellectual universes of the medieval Islamic world.

Roberto Minichini Few figures in the history of Islamic thought have exercised an influence as profound, enduring, and controversial as Ibn ʿArabī. The World of Ibn ʿArabi offers a broad historical and intellectual study of his life, writings, and ideas while remaining accessible to readers approaching the subject for the first time. The book reconstructs the political and religious environment of Almohad al-Andalus, the Sufi networks of the Islamic West, the culture of pilgrimage, the sacred geography of Mecca and the eastern Islamic lands, and the scholarly society in which his thought developed.
Particular attention is devoted to Al-Futūḥāt al-Makkiyya and Fuṣūṣ al-Ḥikam, together with Tarjumān al-Ashwāq and other important writings. Central concepts such as khayāl, the imaginal realm, barzakh, divine self-disclosure, the Divine Names, the immutable entities, the Perfect Human, prophetic inheritance, sainthood, and the Muhammadan Reality are explained carefully within their historical and Qurʾanic contexts.
The study also examines the difficult question of waḥdat al-wujūd, the unity of existence, distinguishing Ibn ʿArabī's own language from the terminology developed by later Akbarian thinkers. His reflections on religious diversity, love, worship, mercy, imagination, dreams, visions, prophecy, resurrection, and spiritual knowledge are presented without reducing them either to modern religious pluralism or to simplistic accusations of pantheism.
The final part follows the extraordinary afterlife of his thought: Ṣadr al-Dīn al-Qūnawī and the formation of the Akbarian tradition, medieval controversies, Ibn Taymiyya's criticism, Persian and Ottoman commentators, Shiʿi and Safavid philosophical receptions, the School of Isfahan, and the later rediscovery of Ibn ʿArabī in European scholarship, perennialism, and contemporary spirituality.
Rather than presenting an abstract collection of mystical doctrines, this book restores Ibn ʿArabī to the historical world in which he lived. Courts, cities, scholars, pilgrims, Sufis, political conflicts, manuscript culture, religious institutions, and intellectual debates form the background against which his metaphysics becomes fully intelligible. The result is a portrait of a thinker whose attempt to understand revelation, existence, imagination, and human perfection continued to inspire admiration and opposition for more than eight centuries. About the Author Roberto Minichini is a writer, poet, essayist, astrologer, and independent scholar. Born in Mainz, Germany, in 1973 to an Italian father and a Croatian mother, he grew up within a multilingual and multicultural European background. His interests include philosophy, religion, esotericism, literature, intellectual history, Islamic thought, Sufism, Shiʿi traditions, astrology, and the comparative study of civilizations. He is the author of works of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction in several languages and conducts his research independently, outside academic institutions and ideological schools.
