When ascetics bragged about their strict practices, he hosted legendary feasts that turned into dharma teachings. And when anyone got too full of their own spiritual accomplishments, Vimalakirti was there with a reality check served with enough style to make RuPaul take notes.
But this wasn't just spiritual theater. Through Vimalakirti's character, the sutra embodies a profound truth about liberation-that everything, absolutely everything, can be transformed into the path of awakening. His legendary illness wasn't just some divine performance art. It was a teaching about how we all experience the fundamental sickness of cyclic existence, and more importantly, how we can transform that very suffering into the path to freedom.
