What really happens in a translator's mind when they read a text? What unseen forces shape the choices they make? And why is no translation ever truly neutral or objective?
In The Translator's Mind, Bruno Osimo-a renowned author, translator, and translation theorist-invites you on a fascinating journey beyond the surface of words. Moving far beyond the traditional view of translation as a simple source-to-target transfer, this groundbreaking work reveals the psychological and semiotic processes that lie at the heart of every translation act.
Drawing on the profound insights of thinkers like Charles Sanders Peirce, Sigmund Freud, and Lev Vygotsky, Osimo challenges the notion of the translator as a neutral black box or a mere telegraph operator. Instead, he presents the translator as a deeply subjective interpreter, whose personal experiences, unconscious memories, and emotional landscapes inevitably infiltrate and shape the final text.

Who This Book Is For:
Unlock the secret life of language. Discover the mind behind the translation.

Uncover the Hidden Dimensions of Translation:
- The Semiotic Web: Learn how every text is a sign to be interpreted, and how the translator's mind creates a mental translation long before any words are written on the page.
- The Language Within: Explore the concept of inner speech and discover how the lightning-fast speed of thought is translated into the slower, more structured language of words, revealing the hypertextual nature of our mental processes.
- The Unconscious Influence: Delve into the Freudian and psychoanalytic parallels of translation, understanding how the primary process of dream-like association plays a role in drafting a text, while the secondary process of revision works to create coherence and cohesion.
- The Illusion of Objectivity: Uncover the unavoidable manipulation that occurs as personal affects, sensations, and idiosyncrasies color every interpretation, making every translation an act of creative, and often unconscious, selection.
- The Interminable Process: Follow the journey of unlimited semiosis, where each translation opens the door to endless new interpretations, and reflect on why the decision to finalize a text is, in itself, an arbitrary choice.
Who This Book Is For:
- Students of Translation: A vital addition to your curriculum that will change how you approach every text.
- Professional Translators: A profound mirror to your own experience, giving a name and a framework to the subtle psychological processes you navigate daily.
- Language and Literature Enthusiasts: A captivating exploration of how human psychology and semiotics shape the way we communicate and understand the world.
