This English edition of Kongōkai Shidai (The Vajradhātu Ritual Sequence) presents the liturgical system composed by Kōkyō (Kogyō or Zenpen) in 1209, a ritual tradition transmitted and preserved at Ninnaji Temple in Kyoto, one of the principal centers of Japanese Esoteric Buddhism. It represents one of the core ritual frameworks of the Vajradhātu Maṇḍala, which consists of the Nine Maṇḍalas (Kue Maṇḍala). Within this vast system, the Kongōkai Shidai uniquely elucidates the moment of enlightenment itself and the method through which it is realized, forming one of the most profound teachings of the Esoteric path. Please note that this text is not intended for independent practice.
One should always receive instruction and empowerment from a qualified Shingon master (Ajari) before attempting these rituals. Without such guidance, correct understanding and realization of the practices will be extremely difficult. All Siddham letters and mantras are presented in Romanized Japanese pronunciation, preserving the traditional phonetic form used in Japan rather than the Sanskrit or English equivalents. In addition to serving as a manual for actual practice, this book may also provide valuable insight for those who wish to understand what forms of ritual and meditative training are performed in Japanese Esoteric Buddhism.
