The New York Botanical Garden: Its Status and Needs is a comprehensive overview of one of the world's leading botanical research institutions during a pivotal era of its growth. Written by the institution itself in 1924, this document details the organizational health, scientific mission, and physical requirements of the garden, providing a rare look at the institutional development of botanical sciences in America.
The work covers critical aspects of the garden's operations, including the expansion of its herbarium, the growth of its specialized library, and its ongoing public education initiatives. It offers a detailed assessment of the living collections and the architectural infrastructure necessary to support world-class research and horticulture. Beyond administrative details, the text captures the strategic vision required to maintain a massive green space and scientific hub within the rapidly expanding urban landscape of New York City.
For historians of science, urban planners, and botanical enthusiasts, this work serves as an invaluable primary source. It highlights the challenges of funding, conservation, and scientific advancement in the early 20th century, emphasizing the enduring value of the garden as a center for biodiversity and public enrichment.
