From the bloodstained sands of ancient Greece to the neon spectacle of Tokyo arenas and the outlaw chaos of the early UFC, this sweeping history traces the violent, fascinating, and often unbelievable rise of mixed martial arts.
MMA: The Early Era is the story of how centuries of combat traditions, underground fighting cultures, carnival attractions, professional wrestling, martial arts philosophy, and no-holds-barred experimentation collided to create one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. Long before sold-out stadiums, billion-dollar television deals, and mainstream acceptance, mixed martial arts existed on the fringes of legality and society - a brutal proving ground where style fought style and reputations could vanish in minutes.
The book begins in the ancient world with Greek pankration, the original hybrid combat sport that blended striking and grappling in contests of raw survival. From there, it follows the evolution of combat through catch wrestling carnivals, vale tudo wars in Brazil, Japanese shoot-style wrestling, and the revolutionary ideas of Bruce Lee, whose philosophy of adaptability would influence generations of fighters.
Readers are taken deep into the rise of the Gracie family and the creation of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, the bizarre spectacle of Muhammad Ali versus Antonio Inoki, the formation of Pancrase and Shooto, and the cultural explosion that led to the creation of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The book recreates the unforgettable madness of UFC 1, when audiences first witnessed karate fighters, wrestlers, boxers, kickboxers, and street fighters collide in a tournament with almost no rules.
As MMA grew, so did the controversy surrounding it. Politicians condemned it as human cockfighting. Pay-per-view carriers abandoned it. Athletic commissions attempted to ban it. Behind the scenes were stories of organized crime rumors, steroid use, fixed-fight allegations, and financial collapse. Yet even as the sport seemed destined to disappear, a generation of unforgettable fighters emerged: Royce Gracie, Kazushi Sakuraba, Tank Abbott, Mark Coleman, Wanderlei Silva, Igor Vovchanchyn, Don Frye, and countless others who helped forge the identity of modern combat sports.
The book also explores MMA's influence on movies, popular culture, underground fandom, and internet communities, showing how a banned and ridiculed spectacle slowly evolved into a global phenomenon. From smoky gyms and VHS tape trading networks to the rise of PRIDE in Japan and the eventual purchase of the UFC by Zuffa, this is the untamed story of a sport fighting for survival.
Packed with larger-than-life personalities, shocking events, cultural history, and unforgettable fights, MMA: The Early Era captures the raw, dangerous, unpredictable years before mixed martial arts became a mainstream empire. It is a story of ambition, violence, mythology, reinvention, and the relentless human fascination with combat.
