The world outside the plants keeps them awake. Thunder far away hints at hunts. When it rains, mountain rivers get bigger and flow past their banks. When it's dry, the sky tastes bad and the grass burns. The five decide to practice being together as a skill, like breathing or balance, under the shadow of the Old Circle. This is because the elders keep saying, Together is stronger.

They learn how to stand back-to-back in a ring, take deep breaths when fear tries to take over, and leave a gap for anyone who is scared or lost to walk through. They promise to give courage in the same way that water gives you time to think gently and sincerely. They promise to listen longer than they panic, to move with purpose instead of making noise, and to make sure that the next generation has a smooth road to follow.
