You cannot photograph a river.

You can photograph a moment of a river - the light on a particular curve at a particular hour - but the river itself, the river as it actually is, is the moving. The instant you stop the moving in order to look at it, what you are looking at is no longer the river.

This is the basic difficulty of time. The clocks tell us that 3:47 p.m. is a thing, that Tuesday is a thing - and these are useful for catching trains. They say almost nothing about what time feels like from the inside.
