About How To Make Sherry Trifle and British Fools -Traditional English Desserts Sherry Trifle is considered by many people to be the premier British dessert experience and yet it is surprisingly simple to make. Unfortunately what appears on many North American menus bears little resemblance to real English Trifle. Trifle is a type of dessert rather than a precise set of ingredients and there can be quite a bit of flexibility on the choice of base and fruit. You'll often find such ingredients as:- Bird's custard
- maraschino cherries
- fruit cocktail
- raspberries
- strawberries (frozen or not)
- lots of heavy whipping cream for the topping
- and let's not forget the ladyfingers cookies!
All of this frequently displayed in special trifle bowls or dishes.
However, many North American trifle recipes call for Jello(R) and vanilla pudding - these are not ingredients you will find in an authentic English trifle. British Fools are light, fresh fruit desserts that are not only tasty, but somewhat impressive, too. I'm happy to include several different types of Fools, some of them with their own variations.
