Waverly, a calm whale shark, lives in the middle of this reef. He's big, but not scary. Small fish feel safe when they swim next to him because his back has pale spots that shine like stars. Waverly is known as the gentle giant of Bluewater Reef because he doesn't use his power to scare people. He knows the ocean's signs, like how the currents change, birds flying above the waves, food hidden in the sand, and places where animals can find food.

The animals at Bluewater Reef get hungry one morning. It's hard to find food, and everyone starts to worry. Pip is a little yellow fish that is scared and hungry. The turtle Luna finds sea grass that isn't strong, and the octopus Coral sees that the shrimp have gone deeper. Waverly calmly hears and says that the food is still there. It has only gone with the flow.

He takes his friends on a trip through the ocean. They discover a silver current full of plankton, a sea grass meadow, sandy plains with secret food, and a kelp nursery where seahorse babies who have gotten lost need help. The animals learn to cope with fear, share food, and care for each other along the way.
