Enjoy your joy? Yes. We're all born with profound motivations toward fulfillment in life. These motivations incline us to feel happiness when things go well, and even joy when something quite special happens. I call these many motivations positive orientations, since they guide us, emotionally, in all kinds of constructive ways. By getting more in sync with your positive orientations, by practicing appreciation meditations, you can enjoy your joy. What are appreciation meditations? They're meditations, acts of concentration, that activate positive emotions. By using empowering poses and expressions, you can call on a positive emotion in seconds. Once you've activated it, you can enjoy it for a minute, or much longer. With more practice, just being reminded of a particular positive emotion will light you up.

Appreciation can be defined as a good understanding of the true meaning and importance of something. So, it's not just about gratitude. By learning how to tap your positive orientations, you can learn to appreciate life all the more. Practicing constructively upbeat emotions will help you to be happier. You'll learn to lift your spirits in seconds. Are these meditations faith-based? Only in the sense that the instruction relies on positive orientations, insights and even poses inspired by the five major religions. In order of presentation in six units, the religions are Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam and Christianity. But these meditations are new, and interfaith. So, people of all faiths are welcome to learn, and no particular faith is endorsed. It's nonsectarian. Rather, the emphasis is on the positive orientations that support all faiths.

This is Unit 1, containing six basic meditations. Their positive orientations include happiness, goodness, self-reliance, love, universal love and welcoming. In happiness, we take pleasure in things that are going well. In goodness, we enjoy feeling that we have done the right thing. In self-reliance, we feel self-collected and confident about considering and demonstrating our useful skills, helpful habits, and ready routines. In love, we cherish and treasure a relationship. In universal love, we're fond of the goodness of a whole class of persons, places or things, or a special example of it. In welcoming, we enjoy greeting others cheerfully, playing host or guest, and bidding all a warm goodbye. Daily practice allows us to be more alive in each moment.
