High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! In 1915 the South African Railways (SAR), later renamed Spoornet and then Transnet Freight Rail (TFR), placed two Class 16A 4-6-2 Pacific locomotives in passenger train service. The South African Class 16A 4-6-2 locomotive was designed by D.A. Hendrie, chief mechanical engineer of the SAR at the time, and built by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow, Scotland. They were identical in all respects to their predecessor Class 16 that was delivered by North British a year earlier, except that they had four cylinders instead of the usual two.
