This book is the result of qualitative academic research based on the principle of epistemological complementarity. Its aim was to understand the psychological significance and the identity-related connections that mothers in exile made between the choice of language they passed on to their children born in their host country and the reasons for their departure from their homeland. Data was collected from trilingual women born in Egypt before or at the time of Nasser's rise to power, through semi-structured interviews. These interviews led to the conclusion that, in their exile, the French language was passed on at the expense of Arabic, following processes rooted in identity (Politics) and serving as a transitional space (Psychology), just as much as it was for them a way to remain connected to their heritage, despite the shift in the language's valence, as well as its prosody, having had to, for some, lose the accent of their origins to better integrate. Between here and there, only the language remained, for them, their true home.
