The political landscape is undergoing a noticeable transformation due to the emergence of new media and the interactive Web 2.0. Some experts view this as a social turning point on a par with the invention and consequences of the printing press. Political engagement and interest are increasingly shifting online, particularly to social media platforms such as Facebook. This thesis examines the psychological complexes users grapple with when participating in political debates on Facebook. It aims to highlight the risks and opportunities of political participation online, as alongside the countless new possibilities for engagement, there also lurk dangers that lead to growing isolation rather than a stronger sense of 'community'. Using eight in-depth interviews that have been conducted and documented, an analysis in the style of morphological psychology will shed light on the paradox that, through their active participation online, users are themselves preventing themselves from becoming more involved in real-world political work again.
