In 1801, the United States was five million people clinging to the eastern seaboard, surrounded by French, Spanish, and British territory it could not control and Native nations it had not defeated. By 1825, it stretched toward the Pacific, had survived a second war against the world's most powerful navy, and had built - through a Supreme Court few Americans paid attention to at the time - the constitutional foundation that still governs the country two centuries later.
Manifest Ambitions tells the story of how it happened: Jefferson buying an empire he believed his own Constitution didn't authorize him to buy. The Louisiana Purchase landing in his lap because a slave revolt in Haiti destroyed Napoleon's colonial ambitions. A vice president killing the era's most brilliant financier in a duel, then standing trial for treason. A war so badly managed that the British burned the White House - and so successfully concluded that the republic's survival was never seriously questioned again.
It is also the story of the question Americans tried hardest not to answer. When Missouri applied for statehood in 1819, the slavery debate the founding generation had deferred broke into the open for the first time in forty years. The compromise that followed didn't resolve anything. It just bought time - exactly forty years of it.
Written for readers who want the full story - diplomatic, military, constitutional, and moral - without textbook dryness or partisan cheerleading, Manifest Ambitions draws on the letters, court opinions, and congressional records of the era to show how a fragile experiment became a continental power, and at what cost.
