Above the western waters of Lough Ree, where mist drifts across the reeds and the old kingdom of Uà Maine once stretched between the Shannon and the Suck, the Kelly story begins. From the descendants of Maine Mór, founder of the kingdom in the fifth century, came the family of Ó Ceallaigh, a name carried across forty generations and destined to become one of Ireland's most enduring surnames.
The family motto, Turris fortis mihi Deus, God is a Strong Tower to Me, reflected a dynasty that ruled its territory under brehon law and raised strongholds across Galway and Roscommon. Tower houses at Aughrim, Galey, Lismany, and Aughrane stood across a landscape shaped by Gaelic power long before the old order began to fall.
When Cromwell's forces swept west to Galway, the Kellys faced the same hard choices as so many Irish Catholic families. Some held their ground. Others were driven into exile across Europe. Forty years later, on the ridge of Kilcommadan at Aughrim, the Gaelic and Catholic world of old Ireland collapsed in a single afternoon. Charles O'Kelly of Screen rode beneath the Jacobite banner with his sons, survived the field, and spent his final years writing Macari Excidium, his name joining a long memory of resistance and loss.
Then came the Great Famine. The fields and townlands of Galway slowly emptied as Kelly families walked away from the only world they had known. Many passed through the packet ports of Liverpool before sailing into America, where along the waterfronts of New York and Boston they began again, carrying little beyond their surname, their faith, and the memory of home.
