Donegal Castle stands at the mouth of the River Eske, its great tower rising above the town while the Bluestack Mountains wall the eastern sky. Between the Erne and the Foyle, in a land once ruled by Gaelic kings, the Gallagher story begins.
The name Gallchobhair was carried through thirty generations from Conall Gulban, son of Niall of the Nine Hostages. It would become one of the great marshal families of Northern Ireland. For centuries, they stood at the right hand of the O'Donnell kings of TÃr Conaill.
Their family motto, Semper et ubique fidelis, meaning Always and Everywhere Faithful, reflected a lineage that held its office through nine generations of Gaelic rule. Their authority stretched across horse troops, household guards, and strongholds in the Finn Valley, Tirhugh, and the Bluestack uplands. The keep at Castlefin and the friary at Donegal Town still stand as fading echoes of that lost Gaelic order.
By the seventeenth century, that world was collapsing. Following the Plantation and Cromwellian conquest, the chiefly lands were confiscated. Manus Ó Gallchobhair, the last chief of the line, fell at Scarrifholis in June 1650, leaving only fragments of the old inheritance behind. At Killymard, his memory survived only in an oak sword handle kept high on a shelf.
Then came the Great Famine. Across Donegal, families were driven from lands that had carried their name for centuries. From the quays of Derry, they crossed the Atlantic to Philadelphia, Boston, and New York, carrying little beyond their faith, their name, and the memory of home.
In this latest volume of the Irish Genealogy Series, Sean Kelly traces the Gallagher journey from the Gaelic lordships of Donegal to the Irish American diaspora. Drawing on annals, archives, and family records, he reveals the lives behind the name, those who stayed, those who left, and those who rebuilt from nothing.
