In the ancient kingdom of Éile, near Tipperary and Offaly, they were princes and patrons of the arts. Despite centuries of persecution, they have always maintained their Catholic faith. When Cromwell's armies destroyed their castles, the Carrolls rebuilt. When their religion was prohibited by law, they practiced it secretly.
The 18th century brought the Great Famine and grand exodus from Ireland. The first Carrolls to set off set up lives in Maryland, where some built fortunes in tobacco and trade. Founding Father, Charles Carroll, for one, risked his empire to sign the Declaration of Independence, adding of Carrollton to his signature so King George would know which Carroll defied him. His cousin John became America's first Catholic bishop.
The Famine years brought thousands more Carrolls to America aboard ships from Cork and Liverpool. From Daniel Carroll, who signed the Constitution, to contemporary leaders in business and politics, the Carrolls have always broken barriers while maintaining their Irish identity. They settled in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Boston, building parishes and schools that anchored Irish American communities.
