When Cromwell's forces swept through south Leinster, the Kavanaghs faced the same hard choices as so many Irish Catholic families. Some held their ground. Others were driven into exile across Europe. Sir Morgan Kavanagh of Clonmullen, a colonel in a Wexford Confederate regiment, fell in battle, his name joining a long memory of resistance and loss.
Then came the Great Famine. The Slaney and Barrow valleys emptied as Kavanagh families left the only homes they had ever known, gathering at the quays of New Ross before crossing the Atlantic. On the eastern shores of America, they began again, carrying a name and legacy that refused to fade.
