In the drumlin country east of Cavan, where lakes gather between sweeping green hills, the Brady story begins. Within the historic parishes of East Breifne, a family took the name Mac Brádaigh and established a presence that endured conquest, plantation, and famine.
Linked to the powerful Uà Briúin and connected to the ruling kindred of Connacht, the Bradys held the hereditary parish priesthood of Drung for four centuries and produced bishops who shaped the religious life of their region. Their motto, fortitudine vincit, by fortitude he conquers, was proven repeatedly in lived experience.
When the administration of Elizabeth I sought to suppress Catholic leadership in Ulster, Richard Brady, Bishop of Kilmore, endured imprisonment three times and returned each time to his people. During the Penal era, Fiachra MacBrady kept learning alive in a hedge school at Stradone, preserving a tradition the law intended to erase.
The upheaval of the Great Famine carried Brady families from Cavan to the port of Drogheda and onward across the Atlantic. In South Boston and New York, they rebuilt their lives and carried their name into a new world.
