There is a word in the Philippines for the way a grandmother sets one extra plate at the table, every night for fifty years, for the guest who has not yet arrived.

The word is kapwa.

It does not translate cleanly into English. Scholars render it as shared humanity or the self in the other - but these are like translating ocean as water. The word is correct. It is also nearly useless.
