夏威夷是太平洋中部的一个群岛，由一百三十多个岛屿组成，其中比较大的岛屿有8个。
大约1600年前，波利尼西亚人乘独木舟来到这个群岛，成为最早的岛民和原住民。由于岛屿面积狭小，与其它大陆相距甚远，长久以来，与世隔绝。岛屿矿藏资源匮乏，没有铁、铜等金属生产。长久以来以石器为生产工具，生产落后；岛民以芋头、红薯、鱼类、水果等为食，以树的内皮制作的卡帕（树皮布）为衣，过着近乎原始的生活。
1782年，夏威夷岛（大岛）的酋长卡美哈美哈开始了统一夏威夷群岛的战争。至1795年，除可爱岛、尼豪岛外，基本统一了夏威夷群岛，建立了夏威夷王国。至1810年，通过谈判，可爱岛、尼豪岛归属夏威夷王国。夏威夷群岛全部在卡美哈美哈领导的夏威夷王国的统治之下。
1878年1月英国探险家库克船长第一次发现和来到夏威夷，夏威夷才为世人所知。慢慢地夏威夷与外界，主要是美国、英国等西方国家增加了往来。
夏威夷王国重视国民的文化教育，大力兴办学校，因而使得国民的识字率比较高。夏威夷的学校，为中国培养出了伟大的革命先行者、封建社会的推翻者、中华民国临时大总统、资产阶级革命家孙中山先生。夏威夷是孙中山的革命根据地，他在这里成立革命组织，为革命募集资金。夏威夷的华侨大力支持孙中山领导的推翻封建帝制的斗争，甚至不惜倾家荡产。
夏威夷王国第七任国王卡瓦卡拉进行环球访问时，到访过中国。清廷直隶总督兼北洋大臣李鸿章在天津接待过他。
早在200多年前，中国人比较早地来到夏威夷，参与檀香木的开发，参与甘蔗、菠萝、蔬菜等种植和加工，最多时曾有数万人在夏威夷做劳工。其中有的人发展成为一些岛屿的首富，甚至娶了夏威夷王国的公主为妻。夏威夷有的地名还是中国人命名的。至今，华人仍是夏威夷族群的一部分。
1893年，美国人策划推翻了夏威夷王朝，建立了所谓的夏威夷共和国，1898年，美国吞并了夏威夷。1959年
