The Hidden Handoff reconstructs the Iran-Contra affair by following what moved, who controlled it, what authority existed at each stage, and what the surviving record can actually support. Rather than compressing the affair into a single story about weapons, money, and politics, the book separates the operational chains that made it possible: presidential authorization, arms transfers, private logistics, financial control, congressional restrictions, and the uneven flow of information inside government.
Beginning with the limits Congress placed on support for the Nicaraguan contras, the narrative tracks how policy objectives continued through foreign funding, private operators, air-supply infrastructure, and networks outside ordinary government channels. It then follows the separate Iran initiative as U.S.-made TOW missiles and HAWK components moved through intermediaries, while approvals, replenishment commitments, pricing decisions, and hostage expectations developed on different timelines.
The two chains converge when Iranian payments enter Enterprise-controlled Swiss accounts and the difference between the incoming funds and the government's weapons cost becomes operationally significant. From there, the book follows the movement of money, the contra resupply system, the Tehran mission, internal warnings, exposure of the secret Iran channel, and the documentary trail investigators later had to reconstruct.
This is also a book about evidence. A presidential finding can establish authorization without proving knowledge of every later act. A bank transfer can establish financial movement without showing who knew the final destination of the funds. An aircraft can establish physical movement without identifying every person who directed the mission. Contemporary records, later testimony, destroyed documents, recovered messages, immunity grants, criminal proceedings, appellate reversals, and presidential pardons are therefore treated as different parts of the record rather than collapsed into one conclusion.
