Secret networks existed. The harder question is what they actually did.
The Stay-Behind Chain reconstructs Operation Gladio and Europe's Cold War stay-behind systems through a disciplined historical question: how far can the surviving record carry claims that clandestine anti-occupation networks later crossed into peacetime political violence?
Beginning with the postwar logic of preparing resistance behind enemy lines, the book follows the Italian system from bilateral planning and the 1956 agreement through Capo Marrargiu, concealed Nasco weapons caches, personnel records, and the 622 names later associated with Gladio. It then examines the CPC and ACC, the allied planning layers that connected national organizations without automatically turning them into a single Europe-wide command.
The investigation becomes more difficult when capability becomes attribution. Weapons can exist without proving their use in a specific bombing. Intelligence services can cooperate without one controlling every operation of another. A source inside an extremist organization can have a state relationship without establishing state direction. The book therefore tests claims through operational sequence: existence, capability, access, tasking, action, and aftermath.
That method is applied to the most disputed territory in the Gladio story, including Peteano, Italy's strategy of tension, intelligence obstruction, extremist networks, and the difference between post-event protection and pre-event command. Rather than treating secrecy or missing records as automatic proof, the reconstruction asks what would have needed to move-people, matériel, instructions, authority, knowledge, and custody-for a specific allegation to become an organizational finding.
The book also traces the 1990 disclosure under Giulio Andreotti, the parliamentary and judicial investigations that followed, and the points at which official inquiries agreed or diverged. Comparative chapters on Belgium, Switzerland's P-26, France, Norway, and the Netherlands show why the label Gladio can obscure important national differences in structure, control, and mission.
At its center is a distinction between what is established and what remains unresolved. The record supports the existence of clandestine stay-behind capabilities, foreign assistance, multinational coordination, hidden resources, deficient oversight, and mission ambiguity. It also documents a wider Cold War environment of covert political action, extremist violence, intelligence contacts, and institutional misconduct. What the book refuses to do is collapse those facts into one larger conclusion without an operational chain connecting them.
Written as an evidence-aware historical investigation, The Stay-Behind Chain is for readers interested in Operation Gladio, Cold War intelligence, European covert networks, Italian political violence, clandestine military planning, and the limits of archival proof. It follows the record as far as it will go-and leaves the remaining gaps visible.
