A Cold War experiment crossed a continent. The surviving record shows how-and where certainty ends.

In 1957 and 1958, the U.S. Army Chemical Corps carried out Operation LAC, or Large Area Coverage, a classified program designed to test whether aerosol-sized material could disperse across enormous distances. Using fluorescent zinc cadmium sulfide particles as a nonbiological tracer, a C-119 aircraft created long airborne release lines while a network of Civil Aeronautics Authority and Weather Bureau stations collected thousands of filters for analysis.
