She used to climb seven flights of stairs because she could. Then came the day she could no longer trust her own legs.
For 23 years, Melissa McWilliams worked as a CNA. She was strong, active, and fiercely independent. Then her strength began to disappear.
After being diagnosed with an autoimmune muscle disease, Melissa went through treatment after treatment while continuing to get weaker. By January 2025, she was falling repeatedly and facing the possibility that a wheelchair-or worse-might become part of her future.
Then she learned about patients in Germany who had received CAR-T cell therapy for autoimmune disease.
Their stories gave her something she desperately needed: hope.
In May 2025, Melissa received CAR-T cells through a clinical trial. At first, she became even weaker and wondered whether she had made a terrible mistake. Then came the little victories: getting off the toilet without help, walking around the block, lifting a gallon of milk, walking through a store, getting back into the water, and learning to trust her body again.
HEALED is Melissa's personal account of losing her strength, taking a chance on an experimental treatment, and fighting her way back toward the thing she valued most-her independence.
This is not a promise of what CAR-T can do for someone else. It is one woman's experience and a story about what another person's journey can sometimes give us:
