No two snowflakes are identical, yet we see only snow. In The Great Bamboozle, Dr. Richard Cimbalo argues that society works the same way: sorting people, ideas, and institutions into convenient categories, then mistaking those categories for reality.
A gross distortion of reality has permeated our lives since the beginning of our social existence. We have lived in a state of perpetual bamboozlement, taught to see categorical wholes and other fictions rather than what is actually there before our eyes.
Drawing on physics, psychology, history, and philosophy, Cimbalo identifies six major institutions, the state, the military, religion, business, science, and the arts, that he calls the Earth gods. He argues their authority depends on convincing people that manufactured order is objective truth, using their systemic power to control and diffuse dissent when that order is questioned. Even a basic scientific fact, like water boiling at 212 degrees Fahrenheit, is treated as a simplification sold as an absolute.
The book is built around three concepts: the Egs (Earth gods), the OTG (One True God), and the IN (the Individual), a framework for examining how manufactured consensus gets passed off as reality, and what it costs us.
Reality is that no two things in the universe are the same, and everything exists in a constant state of flux. Accepting this simple fact can radically alter your worldview, opening new ways of thinking about power, freedom, and what it would take to see the world as it actually is rather than the version we've been sold.
An ambitious socio-philosophical treatise offering provocative ideas that have considerable implications for science and the pursuit of personal freedom. - BlueInk Review
Richard Cimbalo, PhD, earned his doctorate in psychology at SUNY Buffalo. A licensed psychologist and family therapist for 25 years, he is now Professor Emeritus at Daemen University, where he taught for more than 40 years.
