However, Mike has a different idea. Before the boys leave for the skating rink, he pressures Gary and Ray to try marijuana. Ray feels unsure, and Gary knows immediately that something is not right. Although he is nervous about disappointing his friends, Gary remembers an important lesson from his parents: just because someone else is doing something does not make it the right choice.
Gary finds the courage to speak up and say no. He reminds his friends that real friendship is not about following someone into trouble. It is about respecting one another, making responsible choices and helping each other do what is right.
Gary's decision changes the direction of the entire day. By standing firm, he shows Ray and Mike that true leadership does not come from controlling others. It comes from having the confidence to make a good choice, even when it is difficult.
Gary's Birthday is an illustrated children's story about peer pressure, friendship, confidence and positive leadership. It helps young readers understand that uncomfortable feelings can be a warning, that saying no is always an option and that walking away from a dangerous situation is an act of strength.
