Au début du XIXe siècle, les Parisiens ne se précipitent pas pour être enterrés dans ce nouveau cimetière installé à l'écart de la ville. Il faut donc le rendre désirable. Et pour rendre une adresse désirable, même lorsqu'il s'agit de sa dernière, quoi de mieux que d'y installer des célébrités ? Les restes attribués à Molière et La Fontaine y sont transférés. Le prestige arrive avant les clients.
Deux siècles plus tard, l'opération fonctionne toujours.
Le Père-Lachaise est devenu une adresse mythique. On vient du monde entier pour chercher Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, Édith Piaf, Chopin ou Marcel Proust. On photographie leurs tombes, on organise des visites, on achète des guides et certains rêvent même d'y obtenir leur dernière adresse.
Mais pourquoi ?
C'est la question que Richard BERTRAND pose dans Même mort, vous voulez encore être quelqu'un.
Avec humour, ironie et une certaine tendresse pour nos contradictions, l'auteur utilise le Père-Lachaise comme un formidable laboratoire de nos comportements. Car derrière les tombes, les mausolées et les célébrités apparaît une société qui ressemble étrangement à celle des vivants.
Il y a les emplacements prestigieux, les monuments imposants, les inconnus, les vedettes, les visiteurs et même les VIP de l'au-delà . Certains morts attirent des milliers de personnes tandis que leur voisin repose dans l'indifférence générale.
Nous avions pourtant une occasion unique de devenir enfin tous égaux.
Nous avons réussi à recréer une hiérarchie.
Le livre pose alors une question plus personnelle. Pourquoi voulons-nous laisser une trace ? Pourquoi notre nom doit-il survivre ? Pourquoi choisissons-nous une tombe, une épitaphe ou un caveau alors que nous serons les seuls à ne jamais en profiter ? Et que deviennent aujourd'hui ces vieux réflexes à l'époque du selfie, des réseaux sociaux et de l'intelligence artificielle ?
Du transfert de Molière aux selfies devant Jim Morrison, du mausolée bourgeois au profil numérique qui nous survivra peut-être, le même désir traverse les siècles: ne pas disparaître complètement.
Ce livre n'est ni une histoire du Père-Lachaise ni un ouvrage sur la mort. C'est un essai drôle, provocateur et parfois dérangeant sur les vivants.
Car le véritable sujet du Père-Lachaise n'est peut-être pas ceux qui y reposent.
C'est nous.
Nous qui voulons réussir notre vie, trouver notre place, être reconnus, laisser quelque chose derrière nous et, parfois, conserver notre rang jusque dans la tombe.
Après tout, quitte à mourir, autant être bien placé.
Même mort, vous voulez encore être quelqu'un pose finalement une question que nous préférons généralement laisser aux autres:
Que restera-t-il de nous lorsque nous ne serons plus là pour contrôler notre image ?
Et surtout, pourquoi cela nous importe-t-il autant ?
