THE FEELING OF CONSCIOUSNESS
Antonio Damasio and the Birth of the SelfWhat if consciousness does not begin in the brain? What if, before there was thought, memory, language, or even a sense of self, there was something much more fundamental: a living body trying to remain alive?
Antonio Damasio is a neurologist and neuroscientist whose work has profoundly influenced the modern study of emotion, decision-making, the self, and consciousness. Born in Portugal and later established in the United States, Damasio built his career at the intersection of clinical neurology, behavioral neuroscience, brain research, and the philosophy of mind.
Giulia De Ponti approaches Damasio as an author asking a more difficult question:
How much can Damasio's theory actually explain?
Science becomes stronger when we understand the evidence, reconstruct the reasoning, examine the arguments, recognize what has been demonstrated, and then have the courage to ask what remains unexplained.
This is the intellectual principle behind Beyond Limits, the series created by Giulia De Ponti to explore the scientists and thinkers who are pushing our understanding of consciousness, mind, reality, and human existence toward the boundaries of what we currently know.Throughout her work, she approaches these questions with intellectual honesty, resisting easy conclusions and making a clear distinction between established evidence, scientific hypotheses, and the interpretations that readers may ultimately form for themselves.
Her books ask the reader to think. And this is particularly important when the subject is consciousness.
Damasio's research raises questions about emotion and reason and about the emergence of the self itself.
At the center of this journey is the Somatic Marker Hypothesis.
Why can a person retain intelligence and many cognitive abilities while undergoing profound changes in personality and behavior?
Why can damage to particular regions of the brain alter decision-making without simply destroying rational intelligence?
Why does emotion appear to be so deeply involved in what we ordinarily call rational thought?
And why should the state of a living body matter to the existence of a conscious mind?
Damasio's investigations into frontal-lobe damage, the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, decision-making, emotion, and the famous neurological history of Phineas Gage gradually led him toward a much broader conception of the human mind.
Then came Descartes' Error.
For Damasio, the brain is not an isolated computational machine floating above the organism.
It is part of a living system.
And that living system regulates itself, senses its own internal condition, responds to the world, generates feelings, constructs representations, stores memories, and gradually develops something we recognize as a self.
But is that enough?
Does explaining the biological conditions of consciousness explain consciousness itself?
Damasio has profoundly changed the way we think about emotion and consciousness. But important questions remain.
Can the biological regulation of life fully explain subjective experience?
A journey from brain damage to personality, from emotion to reason, from body regulation to feeling, and from feeling to the emergence of the self.
It is also an invitation to look beyond the easy answers.
Because consciousness is not merely the fact that a brain processes information.
It is the fact that something is happening to someone.
And that may be the beginning of the real mystery.
Read the science. Follow the arguments. Question the conclusions.
And then ask yourself:
What does it mean to feel alive? Also from
