Tom O'Leary the Black Rider returns to Earth a year after Picasso City, this time sent back to witness the American Civil War. The time is May 12th and the War has been going for a month in 1861. He is reminded by his superiors not to become involved in the affairs of Earth. However intrigue and emotions rub high as the civil war become more bloody and desperate. Fort Trident is outside the town of Charleston and Tom is suspected of being a Northern spy. Once battles begin in earnest Tom O'Leary finds himself pulled between his attraction to Ruby, the cause of the slaves and the respect of the men - even if he thinks they are misguided. He soon discovers the underbelly of the slave routes to the North and how a certain Levison is helping them to go north and join the fight. Tunnels and trails lead to the ship off the coast.
