The new Sargent, Arthur Bethany, from Waterford, established in Connelly's old station, has his first case. The village hall has been broken into overnight leaving the night watchman (Old James Miller) injured by being hit with a violin (fiddle) leaving it broken beside his unconscious form. What was of such value that someone needed and was prepared to use violence? At the same time he has replaced Rory as constable with a new girl from Derry, Constable, Siobhan Wexford who has two years experience with the Guardia. Dean & Shiona discover she is pregnant and decide to keep it quiet for a time. However tragedy occurs when a miscarriage happens, sending repercussions through the two families. On top of this Tempest passes away in the arms of Father Murphy when she mistakes him for her long dead husband.
Rory decides to let Dean manage the business alone as he wants to take Rosey to Dublin, for an extended holiday of a month.(as they never really had a honeymoon all those years ago.) However while there a telephone conversation with Arthur Bethany interrupts his plans to help investigate an antiques theft ring that specialises in musical instruments. Rosey knows that Rory has a past he does not talk about - where once violence was not a stranger to him - in helping Bethany, Rory has to fall back on skills he had not used in a long time. He has help from the local Guardia in the form of officers such as Lugs Brannigan and Senan Finucane .Thomas Colley wants to get to know Jenny and asks her to walk out with him. Jenny decides to take a gamble on finding love again after tragedy.
