By 2025, Brazil is projected to be the sixth country in the world with the highest percentage of elderly people: around 32 million. And the various areas of knowledge have not yet woken up to more in-depth studies of ageing: psychology and psychoanalysis among them. The aim of this study is to verify the possible relationship between narcissism and ageing, in order to understand the constitution of the self in the elderly. To this end, in addition to the theory of narcissism, the Oedipus complex and depression as a possibility for the self will be addressed. Initially, a brief history is given of the construction of the elderly in society. The roles of sage or hindrance have been present throughout human history. This is followed by a brief account of old age by the father of psychoanalysis - Sigmund Freud. In the conclusion, the author reaffirms the importance of the analytical process for people over 60.
