There are nearly ninety episodes in the four Gospels, and the four evangelists rarely agreed on which to include. Matthew wrote for the synagogue. Mark wrote with breathless urgency. Luke wrote with a historian's precision. John wrote from the depths of eternity. They made different choices, emphasized different truths, and left different things out.
So what happens when four such different witnesses agree?
Strip away everything unique to each Gospel - every parable found in only one, every miracle recorded by only two or three - and ask what all four refused to leave out. Twelve events remain. From the Forerunner in the wilderness to the empty tomb on the first day of the week, these twelve are the beams that hold up the entire structure of the faith. They are the gospel itself.
In FOUR WITNESSES: ONE GOSPEL, Rev. Dr. Billy J. Hill examines each of the twelve events attested by all four evangelists - and makes a discovery that turns the skeptic's favorite objection into the believer's strongest evidence: the differences between the Gospels do not weaken the case. They authenticate it. Four witnesses who tell identical stories are suspected of collusion; four witnesses who agree on the event while differing in vantage are the mark of genuine, independent testimony. This is not a problem to explain away. It is a case no court could dismiss.
Written for the academy, the pulpit, and the pew, this is rigorous biblical scholarship offered as an act of worship - a fourfold cord of testimony, woven through twelve chapters, that no critic can snap. Along the way the reader meets the Fifth Witness who inspired all four, and is invited to become the next voice to bear what they saw.
