Aldric Fumblewick has faced dragonfire, dragon in-laws, and the Vermillion Clan's ancient legal code. What he has not faced is a Tuesday morning windowsill without a cat on it. Grimsby is missing. He hasn't been taken - that would be simpler, and there would be a form for it. He's simply not there. The apartment is, for the first time in years, the correct temperature, because Scorla is too worried to be warm. Pyrra - the orphan hatchling Aldric and Copperpot fostered through OSSRE - sits on the sill where Grimsby should be and refuses to eat. She keeps saying the only word she knows: Cat.
Dame Copperpot files a Missing Familiar Report - Form MF-7, last revised 1847, which still lists familiars as a subcategory of livestock - and discovers Grimsby's own registration file has been amended six times, contains handwriting from a registrar who died forty years ago, and bears one faded note: Do not investigate further. Some questions are load-bearing.
The search takes Aldric through the parts of Castellmere that exist between the maps - a garden older than the city walls, a network of cats who are not, strictly speaking, cats, and a truth about what Grimsby is that will not diminish the mystery so much as deepen it.
