But when Wix discovers a hidden fifth gate leading to a forbidden vault, everything changes.
Inside, they find banned books and the private journal of the High Prophet Jinir-the revered founder of their faith. As Layten reads, he uncovers a devastating truth: Jinir never believed in Sartum. The foundation of the Church, the faith that governs the entire North, may be built on a lie.
Their discovery doesn't go unnoticed. A mysterious ink-maker named Retuin has been tracking Layten using dark magic, and when he invades the vault with a team of extinct creatures-including a faceless Leuh assassin-the friends barely escape with their lives.
But the real danger is just beginning.
A fanatical new Church official, calling himself the Voice of Sartum, arrives in Timik and disbands the House of Knowledge entirely. He declares a holy crusade against the magic-wielding south and conscripts every able-bodied person into his army. The age of scholarship ends overnight.
Meanwhile, Navigator Fean-the aging, quietly desperate leader of all Anchors-struggles to hold back encroaching madness while keeping Layten out of harm's reach. He knows something about the young Scholar's past. Something he's not ready to reveal.
As war looms and the Church tightens its grip, Layten must decide: protect the dangerous truth he's discovered, or let it be buried forever.
