A white terrier bred so that nobody would shoot it by mistake for a fox - and a breed barely a generation old when these chapters were written.

The West-Highland White Terrier - A Complete Anthology of the Dog gathers breed chapters from the kennel literature of 1931 to 1935, among them A. Croxton Smith's About Our Dogs (1931), Arthur Craven's Dogs of the World (1931) and Stanley West's The Book of Dogs (1935). Colonel Edward Donald Malcolm of Poltalloch is said to have bred for the white coat after a sandy-coloured terrier of his was shot in error, and the Kennel Club registered the breed under its present name in 1907 - so the writers here are describing a very young show breed with a very old working job.
