CODESYS is a development system and a runtime that hardware manufacturers license, brand, and ship, which means learning it once carries across an entire catalogue of equipment: Wago, Schneider, ABB, Bosch Rexroth, ifm, Festo, Opto 22, and hundreds more.
Understanding CODESYS teaches the whole system in order, from the first download to the last fault path on a running machine.
What you will learn- The system. What CODESYS actually is, how the development system and the licensed runtime differ, and why version compatibility decides your maintenance strategy.
- The language. All five IEC 61131-3 languages plus CFC, the data model underneath them, and the CASE state machine pattern that replaces a tangle of interlocked booleans.
- The application. Tasks, priority, jitter and the watchdog; libraries and version pinning; fieldbus mapping that survives a hardware change; visualization that stays maintainable.
- The plant. Symbol configuration as a designed interface, OPC UA subscriptions, MQTT with Sparkplug, alarms that get read instead of ignored, trends, and recipes.
- Running it for real. Trace, breakpoints and what they really stop, the online change hazard, source control, security, commissioning order, and field troubleshooting.
Every feature is introduced against a real control problem: a pump that must start against a permissive, a conveyor that has to index, a machine that hands its state to a SCADA system somebody else wrote. Where a detail depends on the software version, the book says so instead of pretending the software never changes.
