In volume one of The Uncertain Legacy members of a family who held extremely rigid and diametrically opposed views about the value of religion and science met to discuss a financial and philosophical legacy their father wanted to pass on to them. Instead they ended up debating the merits of the various opposing certainties which each was determined to believe. Since none of the family was willing to admit to the uncertainty of their beliefs, none were granted any part of the legacy.
