Bernard Palissy (1510-90) was a famous French potter. He is now known for his highly coloured and glazed Palissyware plates, which incorporated life-sized replicas of amphibians, reptiles, shells, bugs and plants. He was an early scientist and naturalist, being among the first to argue for the organic origin of fossils. He was very interested in the process of petrification and fossilisation. His broad interest in science led him to study alchemy.
